Turf & Gophers
Wire Type, Installation & Q.A

Gopher wire is a 1” hexagonal wire mesh that measures 3/4" across the flats of the hexagon.  The steel wire strand is 19-20 gauge and galvanized after weaving for ideal strength and corrosion resistance. These specifications were chosen to prevent gophers from passing or chewing through it. Because gopher wire is hot-dipped galvanized after it is woven, it will easily last 8 - 10 years.

Installing gopher wire is solely up to homeowners to decide if they need it and is NOT the responsibility of any sales personnel to ask if the customer wants it due to the extra cost that will apply. Companies do not know if gophers are present in your area. If you have gophers, tell your sales personnel.

1. This is 19-20 gauge galvanized Gopher Wire. It will offer years of Gopher protection, without rusting away.

2. Grade soil down approximately 3 – 6 inches. Note: The wire needs to be under the underlayment (either Road Base or Decomposed Granite). Do not install the gopher wire after underlayment as this will cause the critters to burrow under the turf and make peaks and valleys in the turf.

3. Roll out wire and use steel landscape staples to attach it to the soil. Use approximately 1 staple per 2 1/2 feet. We sell staples in bundles of 100. Gopher Wire is also available in different sizes and lengths.  It can be special ordered for you. Just ask our Customer Service Representatives.

4. If your installing more than one roll; overlap the rolls about 3” and secure them together using the staples. This will keep even the smallest gophers from being able to burrow through the wire.

5. After the wire is secure to the soil; cover the wire barrier with underlayment. Level the underlayment and grade it to ¾” to 1” below the border. Then you are ready to install your new turf. Note:  We have come across some companies that use the scare tactic saying “Gopher wire needs to be ½” hexagonal wire mesh.” Not True!  If you want to pay more money to have a double layer installed, that would be your mistake! 1” hexagon mesh is sufficient enough to handle any size gopher.

What does it cost to put wire mesh if I do have gophers?

Due to rising fuel prices, we can't put prices online, ask our sales representitive when he/she comes to give you a free in-home estimate.

What will happen if gophers are present and I don’t have gopher wire installed?

All the gophers can do is push up the grass which makes bumps in the turf. If there are many gophers, you could have uneven surface throughout.

How much will it cost me to re-due my turf area if I don’t tell the sales personnel I have gophers?

If you do not tell the sales personnel that you have gophers and you want to add gopher wire afterwards, then the cost would be at company rate per person per hour to remove the existing turf and/or weed barrier, shaking out all the infill out of the turf, pull out all the nails out of the turf, remove all the underlayment out of the way using shovels and wheel barrows, rolling the gopher wire down, tacking it down, shoveling underlayment into wheel barrows, re-leveling area, compacting and installing new weed barrier if needed, installing existing turf and seaming, brushing up existing turf so fibers are standing upward, and installing new infill. This is a full tear-out and install. It would cost the same amount as a new install but without new turf.  It is worth paying the extra money to install the gopher wire the first time.

Is there a guarrantee that gophers will not protrude through the mesh?

There is not a guarrantee that gophers will not protrude through the galvanized mesh. Since our first installation in 2001 we have not had any problems with gophers after installing our wire mesh.
We do offer a 10 year warranty on turf and a 4 year installation warranty on the turf.
